Brussels has 18 Michelin-starred restaurants
Brussels is fast becoming a major gastronomic hub, according to the gourmet culinary rating agency Michelin.
The Belgium capital currently has up to 18 Michelin-starred restaurants, a figure to be released in next year’s 2014 Michelin guidebook for Belgium and Luxembourg.
“The Belgian capital has more starred restaurants than cities like Berlin, Rome or Milan and is gradually imposing itself near the pinnacle of European gastronomy,” said Michelin’s international guides director Michael Ellis ahead of the release.
The geographic layout of the awarded restaurants has the Dutch speaking Flanders region hosting 12 of the eateries while four lie in the French traditional area of Wallonia and two in the multicultural hub of Brussels.
One of the restaurants heralded in the new edition is Bon-Bon who this year received its second Michelin star.
The guide book praised head chef Christope Hardiquest for his “creative cuisine, of remarkable technical brilliance and rooted in very high-quality produce.”
Hardiquest said he was overjoyed with the result.
“This is the realisation of a childhood dream. I knew the restaurant was progressing, but I never expected this.”
Belgium has three restaurants with the highest Michelin grades of three stars.
