Arts&Life reigned supreme in The National’s inaugural bake-off.
It was a one-two finish for Arts&Life at The National’s first ever bake-off.
Amongst the hustle and bustle of the daily news cycle, newspaper staff had the chance to showcase their baking skills.
The rules were simple: it had to be baked and feature chocolate.
Six dishes made the cut including a jar of chocolate chip cookies and a mega triple-chocolate cheese cake.
After gorging on all six dishes, judges found the energy to pick the winner using the cutting edge technology of clapping – the cake receiving the loudest applause clinches the title.
It was Arts&Life’s assistant editor James Gabrillo coming on top with his raspberry and white chocolate cake.
He went home with a specially designed apron and rolling pin.
The birthday boy said he decided to go against the grain.
“I wanted to make something simple and light,” he said.
“When I found out entries had to have chocolate in them, I decided I didn’t want to make anything too heavy or too sweet, so I used white chocolate shavings and fruit.”
Arts&Life page editor Sarah Ferguson came second with her popular Nanaimo bars.
“It is a Canadian confectionery and have long been an office favourite and I’m proud to come second today,” she said.
“If I had one wish, it would be that I grabbed one for myself before they disappeared.”
