Outside the Middle Eastern eatery in Dubai’s Souk Madinat Jumeirah will be this gentleman, offering passers-by some erk-soos drink.
For those who don’t know, erk-soos is a black, mildly sweet, slightly bitter drink made from liquorice root that is served throughout Ramadan.
The process of making it involves putting the ground roots in a muslin cloth and dripping water through it overnight.
It’s generally too complicated and time consuming to make at home. So, instead people typically buy erk-soos from specialised shops or from street vendors.
Those wanting to try a free sample should pop by between 7.30pm and 2am every day throughout the Holy Month.
